It was a great experience seeing Father Damiano Bova rising to his feet from the sepulchre with the ampulla full of the precious liquid in his hand : scented water, absolutely pure, which inexplicably oozes from St Nicholas’ bones. The Holy Manna’s miracle, the 9th of May rite which closes St Nicholas’ celebrations, has happened again this year. An event of great spirituality and faith, which had filled more than ever the Basilica with believers and pilgrims, Catholics and Orthodoxies, devoted to Myra’s Bishop. A joyful Sunday and a more precious one thanks to Tarcisio Bertone with whom Bari’s Prior and Bishop Monsignor Francesco Cacucci has celebrated the Solemn Mass. “St Nicholas unites people – Vatican’s secretary said during the homily – the principals of his teaching are truth and charity”. Hundreds were the believers in the church and thousands watched the event from home on TV or on the web. The Holy Manna’s rite of St Nicholas, thanks to Antenna Sud, was indeed watched not only in Bari, but also all over Italy and abroad, broadcast live on www.saint-nicholas.tv or on www.antennasud.com sites. Many were the European countries connected, first obviously Russia, but also Egypt, USA and Venezuela. The ringing bells announced the miracle to the city. The ampolla containing the Manna will be kept for few days and then, when diluted, given in drops to the believers. This intense week will be closed by and evening pyrotechnic challenge between two firms: Bruscella from Modugno and Fireworks from Palermo. A duel based on ray, sphere, small pipe and parachute bombs which lit up Baris’ lungomare and held us all spellbound. After all, St Nicholas’ magic is also this.
